As parents, some of the most important things we hope to pass on to our children go beyond financial arrangements. While wills and trusts set out the legal framework, they often cannot fully capture the values, intentions, and care behind those decisions.

Yet, when families look for ways to express these deeper intentions, many are unsure how to do so. Letters of Wishes are often misunderstood, commonly perceived as legally binding, overly technical, or something that must be written in formal legal language. These misconceptions can discourage parents from using what is, in fact, a highly personal and meaningful tool.

A Letter of Wishes offers a powerful way to share one’s intentions, values, and guidance with loved ones. When used appropriately, it can provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and help prevent misunderstandings during difficult moments, while sitting meaningfully alongside formal estate planning instruments.

This hands-on workshop has been designed to address these misconceptions and to show participants that a Letter of Wishes can be written in a personal and authentic manner, within clear legal boundaries. Mr Christopher Tan, CEO of Providend, together with Ms Cynthia Tang, Head of Private Client, Tang Thomas LLC, will guide participants through the purpose and proper use of a Letter of Wishes, clarifying key misconceptions, particularly around its non-binding nature, appropriate content, how it can be updated, and how it complements wills and trusts.

Participants will be supported in drafting their own Letters of Wishes during the session, whether they are beginning their estate planning journey or refining existing arrangements. This workshop offers a thoughtful and practical opportunity to take a meaningful step in articulating one’s legacy for the family.
